HBO has signed veteran Irish actor Timothy V Murphy to season two of the hit drama series, “True Detective’ to play opposite fellow Emerald Isle thespian Colin Farrell.
Murphy, a native of Tralee, County Kerry, an Ovation Award-winning star of stage and screen, is set to play Russian gangster Osip Agranov in the series.
Murphy recently played the deliciously sexy villain, Galen O’Shay in FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” series. That role earned him a BuzzFocus Reader’s Choice Award and he is now considered one of the best villains on television.
He also played the villain in CBS’ crime drama “Criminal Minds.”
Executive Producer Erica Messer said “Ian Doyle, thanks to Timothy Murphy, was probably the best bad guy we’ve ever had.”
We're just taking a guess here, but perhaps Murphy's turn as Russian billionaire and tiny giraffe enthusiast Gregor in the DirecTV ads helped land him the "True Detective" part.
Due to the diversity in each role he takes, Murphy is one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood.
Murphy’s film credits include: ‘The Lone Ranger’, ‘The Road To Paloma’, ‘Appaloosa’, ‘National Treasure: Book of Secrets’, and dozens of other features. And his stage work includes: Martin McDonagh’s ‘Beauty Queen of Leenanne’, Berthold Brecht’s ‘Happy End’, and the award-winning ‘Stones In His Pockets’, a play written specifically for Murphy and Conleth Hill by Marie Jones.
HBO has booked Murphy for multiple episodes of season two of “True Detective”, and he is rumored to be featured throughout the entire season. Murphy has just wrapped a new NetFlix Comedy Series, “Grace and Frankie” opposite Jane Fonda and can be seen in numerous soon-to-be-released feature films.
He is currently developing ‘Holy Roller’, a television drama about a priest-gone-bad in Las Vegas, a feature film about Irish Explorer Tom Crean, and option ‘The New Americans’, a super-charged thriller based on the novel by best-selling author and screenwriter, Kyle C. Fitzharris, about the brutal Russian mafia in Los Angeles.
Murphy trained in Dublin, Ireland at the Focus Theatre, which has produced such great Irish actors as Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne.
