The grandfather of internationally famed Irish magician Keith Barry has died from injuries sustained during a robbery in his home in Ireland.
Paddy Barry, 82, from Mount Sion, never regained consciousness after the robbery and died Tuesday morning at the Waterford Regional Hospital
The case has sparked fury in Ireland over attacks on elderly people.
Paddy Barry's grandson - whose TV specials have aired on CBS and CW (an amalgmataion of CBS and Warner Brothers) - has called for zero tolerance for people who attack the elderly.
“I think anybody who enters a pensioner’s home uninvited . . . should get a mandatory sentence, without bail, without excuses,” he said.
Barry - whose stage name is "Druid Master" posted a note on his Web site Tuesday to thank well-wishers.
SHORT NOTE FROM KEITH, Tuesday, Sept 22nd.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone who sent good wishes and support via email or text to me at this very stressful time. As you may know my Grandad, Paddy Barry, was savagely beaten in an attack in his home and passed away last night from his injuries. God Bless Paddy and may he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Keith.
A post mortem is set to reveal how the former postal worker sustained the head injury and injuries to the left side of his body.
The pensioner was able to alert the gardai to his house but upon their arrival, they found him collapsed on the floor.
Gardai are investigating the crime and made one arrest in the case, but the person of interest was later released without charge.
The family released a statement paying tribute to Paddy Barry.
“He was a wonderful man - a great father, an amazing grandfather, a doting great grandfather and he will be missed by not only his family but his neighbors and community,” read part of the statement.
Poignantly, Barry died on the same day as gardai (the Irish police) launched a community week which focuses on the elderly.
