Mother of ‘Craigslist killer’ still awaiting evidence six months after his suicide

Six months ago Philip Markoff, dubbed "The Craigslist Killer", committed suicide in prison. All charges against him were dropped. However, the mother of one of his alleged victims is still waiting to see what evidence the authorities had against him.

Philip Markoff, a 24-year-old former Boston University medical student and fiancé to Irish American, Megan McAllister, allegedly murdered Julissa Brisman in Back Bay hotel in 2008. Her mother Carmen Guzman believed that since Markoff's suicide the police have not seen her murder as a priority.

Guzman said that the file could help to pursue civil actions against the Hotel where Brisman was killed and the gun shop who sold the weapon.

She said "It’s like it never happened, like there was never a case.’’ Speaking to the Boston Globe she said "Once he killed himself, they closed the case, but my daughter’s case must keep going because I want justice for my daughter . . . . He may be dead, but I’m still alive. I’m still suffering. She was my life, the light of my life.’’

Speaking on behalf of Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, Jake Wark said the file will be released in the very near future.

"From the beginning, Julissa Brisman was and remains the heart of this case…It’s on Julissa’s behalf that so many people worked and still work so hard on this case.’’

Conley has said that the evidence against Markoff is overwhelming. He expressed confidence that he would have been convicted he the case gone to trial.

Markoff held two prostitutes at gunpoint during seven days of criminal acts. He found Brisman through a Craigslist ad for erotic massages. According to the police he shot Brisman after he tried to rob her and then shot her when she fought back.

Currently Craigslist is embroiled in a row with its competitor who branded their online classifieds website a "cesspool of crime". Internet marketplace Oodle commissioned "market research" and found that 300 crimes last year were facilitated by Craigslist. These included 12 murders and 105 robberies.
