Ireland’s World Cup hopes have been hit with a treble blow ahead of Friday night’s big game against Germany in Dublin.

Wolves striker Kevin Doyle is definitely out of the Group C clash at the Aviva Stadium.

And both Sean St Ledger and James McClean will undergo scans on injuries on Monday before a decision is made on their fitness.

Defender St Ledger damaged a hamstring in Leicester’s Championship win over Bristol City on Saturday.

Winger McClean reported a ‘very tight groin’ after Sunderland’s Premier League defeat at Manchester City.

St Ledger and McClean will both undergo scans at their clubs on Monday before any decision is made on their availability.

Trapattoni will await the scan results before looking for more replacements for the games with Germany and the Faroes.

He has already called on Manchester United youngster Robbie Brady as a direct replacement for Doyle.

Richard Dunne, only on standby for Germany, is also out with Darren O’Dea and John O’Shea now the only recognised central defenders in Trap’s squad.

Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark is in line to replace St Ledger after being left out of the squad named last week for the World Cup double header against Germany and the Faroe Islands.

Replaced in the second-half of Leicester’s win over Bristol City, St Ledger and the FAI fear the worst.

St Ledger tweeted: “Have a scan Monday to find outcome on hamstring.”

A statement from the FAI said: “Sean St Ledger sustained a suspected hamstring injury today.

“At the moment it looks unlikely that he will be able to play in the Germany match but he will report for assessment.

“James McClean reported a very tight groin after his match today and will be scanned at his club on Monday.”

The FAI also confirmed that Wolves striker Doyle is out with an injury picked up in training on Friday.

The statement said: “Kevin Doyle’s scan showed clear signs of a muscle injury that will rule the player out of international duty for the forthcoming double header.”
