The final countdown to next Saturday’s (June 8) unique team-bonding Gaelic games event in Breezy Point has begun with 15 teams now confirmed for the two seven-a-side competitions for the Breezy and Irish American Cups respectively.
With former Irish boxing star John Duddy conducting the program in Breezy and four former greats of Gaelic football overseeing the coaching on the day, it promises to be a spectacular event – all for the great causes of supporting the Breezy Point Disaster Relief Fund and the GPA’s Education Program for players.
Breezy Point supporters Aer Lingus are again backing the event with New York’s burgeoning Manhattan Gaels GAA club lending its considerable support to the proceedings out on the Rockaways peninsula.
The two competitions will cater for both novices and experienced footballers alike and with exclusive access to a quartet of sporting icons, it promises to be a wonderful celebration of Gaelic sport and Irish culture. It will also provide a very different team-building experience for participants.
The four former stars who will help run the teams on the day are Dublin’s Barry Cahill and Dessie Farrell, Donegal icon Kevin Cassidy and one of Sligo’s greatest ever players Eamonn O’Hara.
O’Hara only recently confirmed his retirement after 19 years in the Sligo jersey. The former All-Star and Irish International Rules player has now been engaged as a football analyst on RTÉ Sunday Game show.
Cahill was a pivotal figure in Dublin’s 2011 All-Ireland winning outfit. He retired last year after 11 years with the Dublin squad and was named as an All-Star in 2007.
Donegal’s Kevin Cassidy missed out on last year’s All-Ireland victory but he remains an iconic figure in the county and is considered one of the great wing-backs of his generation, twice being honoured as an All-Star.
As chief of the players’ body, Dessie Farrell has become one of Irish sport’s most prominent figures. However, he also enjoyed an illustrious career with Dublin, spending over 15 years in the blue jersey, winning an All-Ireland in 1995 and being awarded an All-Star the same year.
