What kind of a patriot is Rush Limbaugh?

Every once in a while in politics the mask slips and you get memorable illustration of what politicians and pundits actually think. Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh had one of those oops moments earlier this week during an interview on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” which broadcasts on the network tonight.

“I thank God every day that it is going down the tubes,” Limbaugh blusters. The "it" in question is the United States of America and Limbaugh is profoundly grateful for any difficulties the nation faces if it creates problems for our President.

Call it sour grapes, call it petty vindictiveness, just don’t call it patriotism, Rush. For Limbaugh the fate of the GOP is clearly more important than the fate of the nation. Limbaugh says he thanks God “every day” that he sees problems for Obama.

Speaking about the presidents’ first State of the Union address Limbaugh was predictably dismissive, making the ridiculous and racially charged suggestion that affirmative action rather than a Harvard law degree was responsible for the President’s rise:

“This is the first time in his life there is not a professor who can turn his C into an A, or to write the law review article for him he can’t write. He is totally exposed. There is nobody to make it better,” Limbaugh said.

It’s a measure of the real difficulties the GOP is currently facing that its all but in name leader can no longer contain himself. This level of rhetoric shows desperation, not strength.
