Retail moguls the Weston family remain in Rich List top spot despite losing €933 million this year.

The Westons have been named in the number one spot on the annual Sunday Times Irish Rich List.

It is the tenth year in a row the family have retained the title as Ireland's richest clan.

The Weston's staggering €11.42bn ($14bn) wealth is due to a trans-Atlantic retail empire that includes  Brown Thomas, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, Penneys, and US retail giant George Weston.

The Irish arm of the empire dates from the 1960s when Galen Sr (now 77) arrived in Ireland to extend his father's Canadian business.

Galen's Dublin-born wife Hilary (76) is a former model and one time lieutenant governor of Ontario.

The family business is headed up by 45-year-old Dublin-born Galen Weston Jr.

Galen Jr is married to Alexandra, an heir to the Canadian-Czech Bata shoe fortune.

Galen's sister Alannah (46) is married to architect Alexander Cochrane whose own family fortune is thanks to the Cantrell Cochrane Irish drinks company that invented ginger ale. 

Alannah is deputy chairman and creative director of Selfridges.

The valuation of the family is down by €933m in the past year. According to The Sunday Times, the fall follows "a bread-pricing scandal, which has compounded a 10% decline in the Canadian dollar – the currency in which much of the Weston family wealth is held – and a 5% fall in share values since the Rich List was last published."

Media mogul Denis O'Brien holds the second spot on the Rich List. The Munster man also saw his fortune fall by €900m in the past year, due in large part to a €500m fall (to €2.5bn) in the value of his Digicel global telecoms operation, in which he holds a 94% stake.

Meanwhile John Dorrance, heir to the Campbell’s Soup fortune, is third in the list with€2.6 billion - up €100m in the past year.

Stripe co-founders John and Patrick Collison and financier Dermot Desmond round out the top five.

This year, the minimum wealth needed to qualify to be named as one of the 300 richest people in Ireland is €52m.
