Daniel and Emily were the most popular names for infants born in Ireland in 2015, based on applications for Irish passports over the past 12 months.
“Of the 133,323 passports issued to children under the age of three, 134 went to girls named Emily and 162 to boys named Daniel,” announced Charlie Flanagan TD, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade.
James, with 155 passports, was the second most popular male name, followed by Jack (129 passports), and Conor (121 passports).
After Emily, Amelia was the most popular female name with 112 passports, followed by 96 passports sent to girls named Emma, another 96 to girls called Mia, and 92 each to babies named Anna and Olivia.
The Irish Times reports that Adam, Liam, Noah, Cillian, Oliver and Harry were also in the top 10 names for boys while Hannah, Sophie, Aoife, Grace, Ava and Lily were among the top 10 names for girls.
Flanagan said: “The list of most popular names reflects the continued overall popularity of traditional Irish names, such as Aoife and Oisín, while also highlighting the vibrant multiculturalism of today’s Ireland, with Zuzanna and Kacper the highest new entries.”
Earlier in the month, The Irish Times announced their list of last year’s top Irish baby names based on the newspaper’s birth announcements column. Chloe was the most popular girl's name on their list, while Jack joined Andrew as the most popular boy's name.
