Who is Castleknock GAA?
Castleknock GAA is Dublin’s youngest senior club and has enjoyed stunning progress, both on and off the field, in its short time in existence.
From small beginnings in 1998, it has become the 4th biggest GAA club in the Capital, with approximately 4,000 members from the surrounding communities of Dublin 15.
The Club won the All-Ireland Hurling Féile in 2007 and the All-Ireland Football Féile in 2016. The Club also won the Minor A Championship in 2011, beating established clubs like Kilmacud Crokes and Ballyboden St Enda’s along the way. The 2011 Minor team included the future Dublin star, Ciarán Kilkenny who has since gone on to win 8 All-Ireland senior football medals and 6 All-Stars awards.
The Club also won the 2019 Minor A Championship, with one of the stars of that team, Senan Forker also breaking into the senior Dublin team this year.
Castleknock stunned the Dublin county scene when they reached the senior championship football final in 2016, losing out on the day to Diarmuid Connolly’s St. Vincent’s.
The Ladies Football team are playing senior 1 football this year and the Camogie team has also enjoyed much success over the years. Two of their Senior Ladies played this year with the Dublin Senior Ladies team, making it a double winning year for the club and the county in the All-Ireland Finals - so the future looks bright for this young and upcoming Gaelic club in Ireland.
The Club’s home ground in Somerton Lane, Castleknock, is nestled above the Strawberry Beds and looks out over the Liffey Valley, with beautiful views of the Dublin mountains in the distance.
Castleknock GAA has ambitious plans for the development of the Club over the next 10-year period. These plans include building a gymnasium, improving the environmental footprint of facilities, and upgrading pitches and lighting.
The fundraising draw will also fund the appointment of a full-time Director of Coaching who will develop and implement coaching and well-being programs for all levels.
The Club has been run entirely by volunteers to date and this would be the first and only employee of the Club since its foundation. This appointment will give young adults every assistance and encouragement to reach their full potential.
Castleknock GAA has become a major part of the day-to-day lives of the entire Dublin 15 community. Members have been involved in major public activities including over €50k being raised for the local Hospice and Sonas Refuge for Women and Children.
Earlier this year, the club hosted St Michael’s GAA club from Creeslough/Dunfanaghy in Donegal and raised over €7,000 for the Creeslough fund following the tragedy that befell the community last year. The clubhouse is used to welcome refugees from the conflict in Ukraine for English language classes every week.
