After a two and a half year battle with aggressive cancer, four-year-old Cork toddler Alisha Savage passed away on Saturday afternoon in Boston. She leaves behind an incredibly loving family as well as many dedicated supporters in Ireland and the US.
In November 2012 Alisha was diagnosed with the very rare Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT) - approximately one in 1.1 million children fall victim to this fatal disease. Her parents, John and Michelle, had already lost a son fifteen years ago.
After Alisha received all that treatment in Ireland had to offer, her family traveled to Boston to put her under the care of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, one of the top pediatric cancer research hospitals in the US. The Savages lived with a host family.
Alisha was a happy and outgoing baby, and her biggest wish to go to Disney World and meet her favorite princesses came true in September with the Make a Wish Foundation. She, her parents and her baby sister Emma Louise were given the full “royal” treatment as a limousine escorted by a Police motorcade brought them to Logan Airport for their flight to Florida, where they were met by cheering fans and a “princess welcome committee.”
Many donated to the Alisha Savage Trust to pay for her hospital expenses, including the unsung heroes at East Boston High School who raised $5,000 for the family.
