The Christmas season is upon us, with twinkly lights and holiday sweaters emerging from wherever it is they hide for the other 11 months of the year.

For many Irish, Christmas is at least a two-week-long celebration, full of family gatherings, parties and pub outings with friends, musical merriment and time-honed traditions.
