Dublin City Council have said that they’re going to be cleaning and inspecting the now viral ‘cherry tomato bridge’ after dozens of tomatoes were left on it.
The cherry tomato bridge became an internet sensation after a number of tomatoes were randomly left on Drumcondra Bridge, which were frozen during the cold snap and then thawed.
The bridge and its tomatoes then became a viral sensation and ‘shrine’ with people offering more cherry tomatoes, cartons of tomato juice and bottles of ketchup, with hundreds of people making the ‘pilgrimage’ to the bridge.
However, the tomatoes were then knocked off the bridge on Monday — leading to many sharing their heartbreak at the ending of the shrine — with Dublin City Council since saying that they plan on cleaning and inspecting the site on a daily basis.
"Dublin City Council are aware of food being presented on Drumcondra bridge and will be cleaning and inspecting the site daily," the council told DublinLive.
"It is asked that food is not discarded and wasted in this manner."
The earliest known recordings of the bridge can be found on Kelly Earley’s Instagram and Sarah Maria Griffin’s TikTok, but neither can explain how the phenomenon came to be.
Initially, the bridge caught the attention of hundreds due to the sheer absurdity of it all - Who put the first set of cherry tomatoes there? How are they surviving the cold snap? How haven’t the birds gotten a hold of them?
@sarahgriffski they have a kind of resilience about them don’t they. anyway i have never done anything weird in my life and just took this video out of respect for the tomatoes survival xxx #tomatoes #dublin #fyp #foryou #diary #dailyroutine #walk #writersoftiktok #tomato #salad ♬ Everything is romantic featuring caroline polachek - Charli xcx & Caroline Polachek

"Visited this sacred space earlier with my family, and they absolutely loved it! The essence of this landmark was truly fascinating, and it has some interesting history linked to it. Would definitely recommend if in the Drumcondra area. Maith thu!" one visitor wrote, clearly enamored by their experience.
The bridge has also led to an onslaught of online discourse, with Irish TikTok overwhelmed with memes, conspiracy theories, reviews, and even an odd ode to the bridge.
