Family clash over new babies' Irish name but are they in the wrong?

An American Mom and her husband, who is from Galway, decided on the name Oisín for one of their children early on in the relationship. While many folks would keep this news under their hats they decided to tell their family about the baby boy's name. Big mistake. 

Taking to Reddit and posting on the page Am I The A*****e, an American woman disclosed how her sister-in-law robbed the Irish baby name she and her County Galway husband had chosen. 

The American woman and her Irish husband revealed to their family that they would be naming their new son Oisín. Her family is Hispanic so she assumed there would be no clashes when choosing this old Irish name. However, this wasn't the case.

"My brother and his wife has as much right to name their child whatever they want. I do not own my name. I have no right to dictate to my brother what he names his kid.

"With that in mind my husband's has a traditional family name that I love. Basically since he and I were dating and started discussing our future we agreed that our son would have that name, Oisín.

"My husband is Irish. Not in the Boston, my great great great grandfather came over in the 1800s kind of way. In the born in Galway kind of way.

"Neither my family or my sister in-law have any other connection to Ireland.

"She got pregnant right around when I did and her son was born two months before ours."

"They named my nephew Oisín Miguel. [sic]"

Although she claimed she wasn't upset this Mom and her Irish husband went ahead and named their son Oisín Daniel. 

She continued "She has flipped out that two cousins will have the same name. She is nuts because our family is Hispanic and half of our cousins are named Carlos or Camilla.

"She is trying to insist we call him by his middle name or change his name. I told her to p*** off.

"My mom is staying neutral but she was very surprised that my brother gave his son an Irish name he knew I was planning on using. She expected him to name him for our late father.

"Anyways my husband's family thinks the whole thing is hilarious, my family thinks my sister-in-law is a weirdo and she thinks I'm an a*****e for copying her."

The Reddit community certainly sided with the Mom and her Irish husband. 

One wrote "You're definitely handling this the right way. Cool as a cucumber, stuck with your plan, and now SIL is the one flipping out."

Another wrote, "The fact that SIL has no Irish connection and still chose an obviously Irish name makes her look all the more foolish, and people will see right through her shenanigans." 

However, there were some that didn't take the Mom's side. 

One wrote "You put your son in the middle of a family war with your naming decision... There are better choices to start in life than that."

Another asked "Why are you only blaming your SIL? It's your brother's fault. Why did he agree when he knew how much it meant to you?"

The Irish name Oisín
