Mayo lad Trevor Hyland and his magnificent mullet.Trevor Hyland

A Co Mayo lad has won the fan vote at the Swiss Mullet Cup after being donned "the fresh prince of Belmullet".

Trevor Hyland, from Shrule in Co Mayo, headed to Switzerland for the Mullet Cup, which - you guessed it - judges men by their mullets.

Despite not winning the overall cup, Trevor was able to take home the audience vote, and can now be known as the people’s champ - with him sharing brilliant photos and clips from the cup.

Trevor sported his mullet and draped himself in a tricolor alongside a Mayo jersey during the competition before another video that was shared to his story saw him and three other lads in Mayo jerseys celebrate as he lifted his trophy.

Speaking last month ahead of the competition, Trevor grew out his ginger locks into the business in the front, party in the back style - before a fellow competitor in a half marathon he was running said he would be perfect in the competition.

"I thought they were joking. I didn’t believe them at first," Trevor told Brendan Courtney on Radio One. "I was just growing the mullet for fun and then it’s just kinda spiraled from there."

As for his styling of the mullet, Trevor enlisted the help of Autonomy Hair Studios’ Ciaran Collopy - and "two to three" hours and a full can of hairspray later, he had the glorious hair.

"I remember leaving the place, I told him I was going out meeting the lads at the pub, and he was like: 'Just stay away from open flames' because I think he used a full can of hair spray.

"We wanted something almost cartoony, something that really stood out. I think we did it."

Trevor debuted his mullet for his family at his sister’s wedding — joking that it was like "wearing a white dress" to the wedding.

"It was only then when we sat down for dinner that evening, my mother looked up at me. She was like: 'That’s… an interesting haircut.'"

The winner would win a free year’s supply of beer, but Trevor didn’t go home empty-handed as Mullet Tea, the beer in question, also sent him a care package ahead of the competition.
