Donegal’s Danu Young Women’s Choir has quickly garnered a reputation for its powerful and captivating performances, often drawing sell-out audiences to some of the most cherished venues in the county and representing Ireland on the global stage.
Formed just three years ago by Douglas Carnes, a New York native who relocated to Donegal, Danu has rapidly become a beacon of musical excellence. Their oldest choir has 62 members, aged 14 to 18 and they have a shared passion for diverse genres and a commitment to celebrating female voices. Carnes, inspired by the lack of extracurricular singing opportunities for young women in Donegal, founded Danu as a space for empowerment and artistic growth.
Their stunning vocal harmonies have echoed through the historic Ards Friary and the renowned Guildhall in Derry, where their performances left audiences spellbound. Their concert at Conwal Church in Letterkenny further cemented their place in the hearts of Donegal’s music lovers, as the choir showcased the depth and richness of their repertoire. Each performance is a testament to the choir's exceptional talent, passionate dedication, and ability to connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level.
Most recently, Danu and their younger choir, Danín, were welcomed with enthusiasm as they prepared for two exciting performances in Ramelton. These performances promise to be another milestone in the choir's journey, as they continue to inspire and enchant local audiences with their dynamic sound. As their fame spreads, the choir's ability to consistently deliver performances that captivate and engage audiences reflects the immense talent and hard work that has made Danu Young Women’s Choir a cornerstone of Donegal's vibrant musical community. With each concert, Danu brings something truly special to the stage, further solidifying their place as one of the region's most beloved musical acts.
Building on their local success, the choir embarked on an extraordinary journey to New York City in January 2024, where they left an indelible mark on audiences.

Their journey to New York was packed with unforgettable moments and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. From attending a Broadway performance of "Wicked" and engaging in a private Q&A session with cast members to ice-skating under the Rockefeller Centre’s iconic tree, the group embraced the city’s energy.
They also embraced the spirit of giving by volunteering at the “Heart of Dinner” organization in New York City. Their participation reflects the strong Irish tradition of charity and community support. The choir also performed at the renowned St. Patrick’s Cathedral, an experience that left a lasting impression on both the performers and the audience. The Irish General Consulate hosted a reception for the choir, further strengthening their ties to the cultural heritage that they represent.
The experience deepened during an intense five-hour coaching session with Broadway professionals, which Carnes described as transformative.
"The girls leveled up during those coaching sessions," he said.
Their hard work paid off, with one ensemble placing fifth in the world during the quartet competition.
Two standout quartets from Danu have put Ireland firmly on the international barbershop map. Ceoltóirí Canóla and The Platinum Dolls have captured hearts and accolades at home and abroad.
Ceoltóirí Canóla, formed in late 2022, claimed first place at the Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS) National Quartet Competition in Killarney and wowed audiences at conventions in New York and the UK. They are now preparing for their next milestone: competing in the Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention’s Next Generation Barbershop Varsity Chorus in Denver, Colorado, in July 2025.
The Platinum Dolls, another rising quartet, earned their place at the Barbershop Harmony Society’s Midwinter Junior Quartet Contest in San Antonio, Texas. Their journey was made possible by the unwavering support of the Donegal community, which rallied around them through fundraising efforts.
Danu’s impact extends beyond its senior choir. Younger singers now thrive in Danu’s junior choirs, Danín and Faíthín, fostering a pipeline of talent for years to come.
Meanwhile, the senior choir continues to inspire. At the IABS Convention 2024, Danu achieved remarkable success across multiple categories. Ceoltóirí Canóla not only clinched the prestigious First Place in the National Quartet Competition but also earned the esteemed Most Improved Award. Meanwhile, The Platinum Dolls triumphed in the Youth Quartet Competition, securing an impressive first-place finish as well as Best Novice Quartet.
With each performance, Danu redefines excellence in Irish choral music, creating a legacy that inspires young singers and captivates audiences worldwide. Their journey is far from over, and their music continues to resonate across continents.
Reflecting on the choir’s remarkable journey and its enduring impact, founder Douglas Carnes shares, "The future of Danu Young Women’s Choir is, and always has been, to 'change the world through music.'"
This powerful vision continues to guide the choir as they inspire audiences and uplift communities with their extraordinary talent and passion.
