One very rare Irish girl’s name could see a rise in use after it was used in a Netflix show which has gained popularity.

Irish names are a dime a dozen these days and while they are all incredibly beautiful, they are also becoming increasingly popular so if you want your child to have an unusual Irish name it can be difficult to find one.

However, one Irish show, which was released on Netflix earlier this year and is very popular among viewers, has publicised a gorgeous and not really used Irish name, a rare find indeed.

The show is "Bodkin" and it was released on the streaming platform back in May. It is a dark comedy/thriller series, produced by the Obamas’ production company and has been likened to "Only Murderers in the Building."

"Bodkin" showcases some stunning Irish views and has a host of fantastic Irish actors including Siobhán Cullen who plays the protagonist Dove. And it is her name that has caught people’s attention. Not Dove though, sure that’s not an Irish name.

But it is short for one – Dubheasa.

What does the Irish name Dubheasa mean?

Dubheasa is an ancient and very underused Irish that we think deserves a rise in popularity. It is pronounced du-vess-a and means ‘dark waterfall.'

It was common in 13th and 14th-century Ireland, but hasn’t been seen much since then.

According to recent figures from Ireland's Central Statistics Office, the moniker was given to less than three babies in 2023 - now, those are stats we like when it comes to choosing baby names!

Plus, we must admit that ‘Dove’ as a potential nickname is adorable!

This isn’t the first time that a TV show has popularised an Irish name. Maeve spiked in popularity in the US after a character was given the title on the much-loved series "Sex Education."
