The first trailer for John Crowley’s upcoming drama Brooklyn, about a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn, has been released. 

Based on Colm Tóibín’s novel, the film drew rave reviews at this year’s Sundance film festival and has been pegged as an Oscar contender. The film was picked up for distribution by Fox Searchlight for a hefty $9m, The Guardian reports.

The film stars Saoirse Ronan as young Irish immigrant Eilis Lacey.

Here is the film's synopsis: "Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within."

The project hit close to home for Ronan, who was born in the Bronx, but returned to live in Ireland as a child.

“This movie is really my mother and father’s story,” said the 21-year-old actress in an interview with RogerEbert.com earlier this year.

The film will open in the U.S. in November.
