Amazon Studios has announced that a re-imagining of Martin Scorsese’s mobster drama ‘The Departed’ is being planned as an original episodic series.

The 2006 award winning crime drama, a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong movie ‘Infernal Affairs,’ won several academy awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

Jack Nicholson’s character in the film, Irish Mob boss Frank Costello, is loosely based on real-life gangster Whitey Bulger. FBI agent John Connolly was the basis of Matt Damon’s character, Colin Sullivan.

While Scorcese’s film was based in Boston, the new Amazon show will be set in present-day Chicago amid warring ethnic drug gangs, reports Engadget.com. The plot will revolve around a young cop going undercover inside a Latino gang, which plants its own mole inside the police department.

The series, which will be written and executive produced by ‘Detroit 1-8-7’ creator Jason Richman, is being produced in conjunction with Vertigo Entertainment, Plan B Entertainment, and Initial Entertainment Group in association with Warner Bros TV.

A premiere date for the series has not yet been announced.
