The incredible push for Caroline Kennedy to become the next senator from New York has to be seen to be believed.

Last week it seemed that many of the stalwarts of New York politics were going to oppose her and create opportunities for themselves or candidates they backed.

This week, with The New York Times leading the way, the New York establishment has begun falling into line - and then some.

The key figure will still be Senator Chuck Schumer. Last week the New York Post reported that Schumer was unlikely to back Kennedy and that Governor David Paterson considered her a long shot.

This week the New York Post has endorsed Kennedy, an amazing move for a conservative newspaper.

Schumer has also made clear his support for her, and the governor is finding himself in the position where he will alienate most of the political establishment if he does not pick her.

All in all it is an example of Kennedy political savvy at its best. Once she made the decision, Kennedy was going to leave no stone unturned in order to get selected.

Paterson also loves the national limelight, and he will be certainly in the spotlight if he picks her. It will also do him a power of good in his own re-election race if there is a Kennedy on the ticket.
