Bob Geldof, best known as the activist humanitarian who put together the Band Aid iconic holiday song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” and the subsequent Live Aid shows in London and the U.S., is taking a cue from the likes of Fleetwood Mac and reforming his band the Boomtown Rats this summer for an appearance at the Isle of Wight festival in England in June.
Their big song, “I Don’t Like Mondays,” was their original ticket to fame in the U.K, and Ireland in the late ‘70s, early ‘80s, but they never quite made it over here. They haven’t played together in 25 years, and Geldof, now 61, says he’s getting his body in tip-top shape.
“In terms of being match fit, we are all on a rigid low-carb diet,” Dubliner Geldof says.
“There is no point waddling out on bloody stage at the Isle of Wight. We are going to look like sexy beasts, I can assure you.”
As of now, the Isle of Wight gig on June 16 is the only show on the schedule, but doubtless that will change. Given that Bon Jovi is also on tour this summer, Geldof didn’t rule out a meet-up with his old pals from New Jersey, who are playing Slane Castle in Co. Meath on June 15.
“Bon Jovi are great friends,” Geldof said. “I sing with Jon when he does Wembley or the O2.”
