U2 frontman Bono paid a surprise visit to Downey's in Waterford.Downey's Bar, Facebook

The legendary U2 singer was in the Crystal County over the weekend to mark his bandmate The Edge’s wife Morleigh Steinberg’s 60th birthday party in the lavish Lismore Castle.

Prior to heading back on the road to Dublin, Bono and Alisson made the trip to Downeys Bar in Dungarvan on October 21, which is owned by his friend John McGrath.

Bono and his wife’s visit to Downey’s arrived as they planned to go to the nearby St. Mary’s Church, Dungarvan, where U2’s late tour manager Dennis Sheehan is buried.

Mr. Sheehan, who worked with U2 for over 30 years as well as with Led Zeppelin and Iggy Pop, passed away following a heart attack suffered in Los Angeles in 2015.

Downey’s Pub wrote on Facebook alongside an image: "A surprise visit by Bono and Ali, they called to Downeys Bar after visiting the grave of their late Tour Manager Dennis Sheehan.

"They were on their way home from Lismore Castle after celebrating Edge’s wife Morleigh 60th Birthday Party."

The comments section of Downey’s Pub’s post saw members of the public having their say on Bono’s surprise visit and paying their respects to Mr Sheehan.

One person said: "Very nice of them to pop in and pay their respects to Dennis. Nice one John … a little bit jealous!! Actually a lot, great pic for the wall."

Another added: "Ahh that’s a great picture John lovely to have such a great visit by Bono."

While someone wrote: "Hoping to come to Waterford soon to pay respects at Dennis’s grave. I’ll pop in for a jar!"

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Downey’s owner said that the pub was closed at the time Bono rang him from his car and that it was "lovely to shake hands with him."
