The Irish Film and Television Academy announced their shortlist of nominees for their 40 categories on Wednesday. This year marks the 10th annual IFTAs which will take place on February 9th.
Nominations are announced in categories across film and television, celebrating the highest standard of Irish talent over the past twelve months. All IFTA’s categories have been shortlisted by Members of the Irish Film & Television Academy alongside a select Jury panel of industry experts from around the world.
Reflecting the Irish film and television industry’s continuing development of its creative, original and entertaining output year-on-year, IFTA received 315 titles submitted for consideration in the 2013 Awards.
Academy CEO, Aine Moriarty stated that: “The past 12 months has shown this industry to be resilient and hard-working, producing some of the most diverse, engaging and talked-about Irish dramas, documentaries, feature films; entertainment and factual programs, and there’s no shortage of new and upcoming Irish creative talent, ready to make their mark on the world stage.”
“It’s a time to acknowledge and be proud of their achievements, and the 10th Ceremony will be a great showcase of this work and a chance to reflect on just how far our home industry has come in the last 10 years”.
‘Bridesmaids’ star and Roscommon native Chris O’Dowd received a strong five nominations for his Irish television program ‘Moone Boy,’ a show about a young Irish boy and his imaginary friend. O’Dowd is nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Deirdre O’Kane is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Declan Lowney is nominated for Best Director and the show is nominated for Best Script Drama and Entertainment.
Irish-English director Martin McDonagh is nominated for both Best Director and Best Film for his work on ‘Seven Psychopaths.’ The film’s star and Dublin native Colin Farrell is also nominated for Best Actor.
The highly acclaimed HBO series ‘Game of Thrones,’ which often films in Northern Ireland, was nominated for three awards.
Domhnall Gleeson, son of Brendan Gleeson, received a Supporting Actor nomination for his role in ‘Anna Karenina,’ which stars Keira Knightley and Jude Law.
Leading the pack with eleven nominations is RTE’s hit drama ‘Love/Hate,’ beating its own 2012 record of ten nominations. The series was nominated for Best Television Drama, Stuart Carolan for Script, David Caffrey for Director, along with Tom Vaughan Lawlor and Robert Sheehan for Lead Actor, and Charlie Murphy and Susan Loughnane for Lead Actress and Supporting Actress.
