ON Friday night, October 3 starting at 9 p.m. there is another great opportunity to hear the music of East Galway as channeled through the wonderful flute playing of Mike Rafferty.

Turning 83 this month, he will be sharing the gift of music with all those who come out to the Blarney Star concert series at Glucksman Ireland House (1 Washington Mews on lower Fifth Avenue on the NY University campus).

Long one of the most popular and influential musicians in the New York Irish music scene, he is front and center of the Galway contingent that has dominated the region filled with many great trad musicians who savor the "pure drop."

Foremost among the musicians, he has influenced is his own daughter Mary, a fine accordion, whistle and flute player in the Galway style who starred with Cherish the Ladies for a number of years before settling down into family life away from the road.

She will be appearing along with her husband, Donal Clancy, of DANU fame who is also a superb guitarist. Mike and Mary produced three solid duet recordings that have firmly established their reputation for music that comes from the heart and hearth.
