BOB Geldof pioneered the idea of rockers uniting in a global effort for a good cause through his original Live Aid concerts in July of 1985 to highlight the famine in Ethiopia, but the Irish activist is none too pleased that Al Gore has honed in on his territory by organizing a similar event this summer to remind folks that we've got a global warming crisis going on.

Gore's Live Earth shows, set for nine cities, including London and New York, on July 7, amount to nothing more than "just an enormous pop concert," Geldof said. And couldn't our former veep have come up with a more original name?

"It sounds like Live Aid. We're getting lots of responses from people who think we are organizing it," Geldof sniffed.

His main beef with the shows stems from a lack of new government commitments on global warming that would make the event more meaningful.

"I hope they're a success. But why is (Gore) actually organizing them? To make us aware of the greenhouse effect? Everybody's known about that problem for years. We are all f***ing conscious of global warming," said Geldof.

"I would only organize (Live Earth) if I could go on stage and announce concrete environmental measures from the American presidential candidates, Congress or major corporations. They haven't got those guarantees, so it's just an enormous pop concert or the umpteenth time that, say, Madonna or Coldplay get up on stage."

The sniping doesn't end with Geldof. Who frontman Roger Daltrey also lashed out at Gore's shows as actually adding to the problem of global warming given all the jets that will have to ferry the stars here and there (good point!), but then he gave Sir Bob a piece of his mind for his Live 8 concerts in 2005 which marked the 20th anniversary of Live Aid. "What did we really achieve at Live 8? We got loads of platitudes and no action. Who were we kidding there? At least with Live Aid, Bob Geldof was willing to work the trenches and they did save a lot of lives. We could see what we achieved at the end of it," said Daltrey, who participated in Live 8 with his band.
