The space drama “Gravity” is up for a string of accolades, including the coveted Best Film and Outstanding British Film, while its star Sandra Bullock is also nominated for Best Actress and filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron is nominated for Best Director.
'American Hustle' and '12 Years a Slave' received nominations in 10 categories, while 'Captain Phillips' is up for nine awards.
All four of the top nominated movies will contest for Best Film, along with 'Philomena.'
'Gravity' will contest for Outstanding British Film along with 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,' 'Philomena,' 'Rush'' 'Saving Mr Banks,' and 'The Selfish Giant.'
Meanwhile, in the Best Actor category, 'American Hustle' actor Christian Bale and '12 Years a Slave' star Chiwetel Ejiofor received nominations, as did 'Nebraska' actor Bruce Bern, Leonardo DiCaprio for 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and Tom Hanks for 'Captain Phillips.'
'Gravity' star Bullock finds herself in the running alongside 'American Hustle's Amy Adams, 'Blue Jasmine' actress Cate Blanchett, 'Philomena's' Dame Judi Dench and Emma Thompson for 'Saving Mr. Banks.'
Best Supporting Actor will be contested by Barkhad Adbi from 'Captain Phillips,' 'Rush' star Daniel Bruhl, 'American Hustle's' Bradley Cooper, 'Behind the Candelabra' star Matt Damon and '12 Years a Slave' actor Michael Fassbender.
A fourth 'American Hustle' star, Jennifer Lawrence, is nominated for Best Supporting Actress but faces competition from 'Blue Jasmine's Sally Hawkins, '12 Years a Slave' actress Lupita Nyong'o, Oprah Winfrey, who starred in 'The Butler,' and 'August: Osage County' star Julia Roberts.
Best Director will be contested between Alfonso Cuaron ('Gravity'),
Paul Greengrass ('Captain Phillips'), Steve McQueen ('12 Years a Slave'), David O Russell ('American Hustle') and Martin Scorsese ('The Wolf of Wall Street').
The award winners will be announced at a ceremony at London's Royal Opera House on 16 February.
