A new horror film will start shooting in Northern Ireland next month, according to reports.

"The Morrigan", starring Saffron Burrows (Mozart in the Jungle, Deep Blue Sea) and Toby Stephens (Black Sails), follows a successful archaeologist who travels to Ireland to excavate a centuries-old tomb.

However, during her excavations, she accidentally unleashes a horror hidden from humanity for centuries and must fight to save her rebellious daughter, who becomes possessed by a pagan war goddess called the Morrigan.

"The Morrigan" is written and directed by Colum Eastwood and is based on the short film of the same name. Eastwood is a Screen Star of Tomorrow, an award recognized emerging talent in the film industry in the UK and Ireland.

The film also features James Cosmo, a Scottish actor who has previously starred in "Braveheart" and the Irish horror film "The Hole in the Ground".

"The Morrigan" is produced by Ashley Holberry and Gavin Cosmo Mehrtens of Cowboy Cosmonaut Films, with finance provided by Quickfire Films, Northern Ireland Screen, M2 Mediapost, and private equity.

Holberry and Mehrtens, who met at Working Title, are also working on the survival thriller "Bayou", which is also due to begin filming this year.

AMP is handling worldwide sales and will be selling this month ahead of the American Film Market in early November.

Deadline reports that filming is due to begin in Northern Ireland on November 6.

James Norrie of AMP told Northern Ireland Screen that the film "breathes new life" into the demonic possession genre of horror films.

"With its rich pagan folklore, it manages to be a balls-to-the-wall horror, and a brilliant female-centric genre movie showcasing just how far a mother will go to protect her child. We are thrilled to be aboard," Norrie told Northern Ireland Screen.
