A priest from Co Mayo has told his parishioners to watch the new Meghan Markle documentary — as penance for Lent.
The new documentary, titled "With Love, Meghan," shows the Duchess of Sussex sharing gardening, cooking, and hosting tips on Netflix — and has been subject to negative reviews.
Now, Balla priest Fr Brendan Kilcoyne has said that the show is "bloody awful" and suggested that those who are celebrating Lent should watch the show as penance.
Fr Kilcoyne singled out one scene of the show where Ms. Markle talks to a beekeeper, claiming that the bees were "mortified" by the conversation and sarcastically described the conversation as "riveting."
Fr Kilcoyne added that the British Royals had a "narrow escape" after she and her husband Prince Harry left the Royals, saying "The great [royal family] line that has given us so many English kings and queens — from an Irish Catholic point of view, perhaps of varying attractiveness — it does not deserve this. It had a narrow escape."
Fr Kilcoyne also said that Ms. Markle is "nemesis" and "anti-monarchy," adding "Thank God they’re out there in Montecito, herself and her poor, deluded noggins of a husband."
"Say what you like about the husband and others – he is a former and distinguished soldier, as are his uncles, as was his father," the rant continued. "They do not deserve to be connected like this to somebody who is clearly operating at such a shallow level [Meghan]."
Fr. Kilcoyne added that Catholics should watch the show as penance during Lent, claiming that it’s so bad it’s good.
"It’s cat, it’s cat in the Irish sense, meaning it’s bloody awful. But it’s so cat, it’s actually quite good. It’s enjoyable," he said, telling Catholics to "drink in the mediocrity and savour the narrow escape that one of the most distinguished royal lines in the world has just had."
Despite the priest’s criticisms/love for the show, the eight-episode series has been met with a negative reception — however, this hasn’t deterred Netflix who have since announced that they’re renewing the show for a second season.
According to People, the second season of the series has already been filmed and will be hitting Netflix this autumn.
Describing the show in an interview with People this week, Meghan explained it is about "doing what you can do, and doing it with love."
Meghan shared the news — which can be construed as good or bad, depending on who you ask — on social media, writing "If you’re loving Season 1, just wait until you see the fun we cooked up on Season 2!
"Thanks for joining the party, and an endless thanks to the amazing team and crew who helped bring it all to life!"
