New York's hurlers completed a dream start to 2024 after beating Mayo by 13 points in the Connacht Hurling League final on Saturday.

An incredibly impressive New York side, who demolished Galway in the Connacht Hurling League semi-final, were far too good for Mayo, winning out on a scoreline of 2-25 to 2-12 at the University of Galway GAA Air Dome.

New York dominated Saturday's final from start to finish, taking a commanding 0-12 to 1-02 lead into the break after a brilliant first half.

Mayo, who were missing several key players, conceded a staggering 11 unanswered scores in the first half as New York but on a sensational display of hurling.

The Exiles raised their first green flag of the game shortly after halftime when Martin Cullen fired home within a minute of the restart.

Mayo struggled to contain New York in the second half and only scored their first point from play in the half in second-half injury time.

The Westerners raised their second green flag of the evening through a close-range Cormac Phillips free that found the roof of the net late on, but it was only a consolation score with New York firmly in the driving seat.

New York scored a second goal of their own late on through Ger McPartland, who combined with the excellent Ruadhan Mulrooney before finishing to the net.

It marks New York's first Connacht Hurling League title since the tournament was launched in 2022 and rounds off an excellent campaign that saw them demolish a Galway development team by 11 points at the Air Dome during the week.

Last year, the Exiles won the Connacht Hurling League Shield, which offers defeated teams an additional opportunity to win silverware in the opening weeks of the year.
