Niall Horan joined his former One Direction bandmates in a joint statement on Thursday, October 17, to mourn the death of Liam Payne.

"We're completely devastated by the news of Liam's passing," Horan, joined by Louis Hamilton, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles, said on Thursday.

"In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.

"The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.

"For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us.

"We will miss him terribly.

"We love you Liam."

The message was the first post on One Direction's Instagram page, which has nearly 23 million followers, since July 2020.

Earlier on Thursday, the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office confirmed that Payne, 31, died on Wednesday of "multiple trauma" and "internal and external hemorrhage," the result of the fall he suffered from the balcony of the third-floor room of the hotel in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo where he was staying.

Payne, a native of Wolverhampton in London, was one member of the global phenomenon boy band One Direction, which was formed on the X-Factor UK in 2010.

Through the band, Payne and Horan formed a close friendship that remained intact even after One Direction went on an "indefinite hiatus" in 2016.

On September 30, Payne arrived in Argentina where he attended his former bandmate Niall Horan's concert in Buenos Aires on October 2. The stop was part of the Irish singer-songwriter's "The Show" tour.

The two former bandmates grabbed a selfie at the concert:
