Rupert Everett, best known for his role in “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, is to make his directorial debut with the Oscar Wilde biopic “The Happy Prince”.
The Germany based production will star, Everett, as Wilde, alongside Colin Firth (“The Kings Speech”) and Emma Watson (“Harry Potter”).
Everett also wrote the script which is described by Variety as a comedy with tragic undertones. The movie will tell the story “of the Irish playwright's final days as he observes his own failure with ironic distance and humor.”
In the past Everett has started in movie adaptations of Wilde’s work such as “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “An Ideal Husband.” He has long been a champion of Wilde stage and written works.
Colin Firth has been cast as Wilde’s (Everett’s) friend and confident Reginald “Reggie” Turner, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The cast also includes Tom Wilkinson and Edward Fox.
Shooting is planned for Summer 2013.
