‘Scéal na Gaeilge’ is a two part documentary series which traces the journey of the Irish language from biblical times to the present day. As well as winning Best Factual Entertainment category at the 2013 Celtic Media Festival held in Swansea, Wales, the series has also been nominated for an Irish Film & Television Academy Award (IFTA) for Best Sound and won the Oireachtas Media Award for Best TV Series.
Produced using a mixture of animation, green screen and location filming, ‘Scéal na Gaeilge’ talks about the history and origins of the Irish language by taking a lighthearted look at the historical and mythological stories associated with it.
The two part series was presented and written by Alan Titley, directed by Diarmuid Goggins and produced by Ciarán Ó Cofaigh with funding from TG4, The BAI, Foras na Gaeilge and ROSG.
Speaking about the the success of ‘Scéal na Gaeilge’ at the Celtic Media Festival, Producer Ciarán Ó Cofaigh said:
‘It’s great to win a prize at a major international festival like this. In my opinion, we’re obliged to find new ways to present documentary programmes in a visual, energetic and fun way. We believe that we have proven that any subject matter can be presented in an entertaining humorous style to all age groups,’ the Irish Film and Television Network reports.
