The Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed star passed away on Saturday, July 13 after a long battle with stage four cancer, surrounded by her family and beloved dog Bowie.

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy, after which she revealed she was in remission in 2017.

Tragically, Shannen's cancer returned in 2019 and the following year she shared with fans that she had a stage four diagnosis.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the actress's publicist said: "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease."

The statement continued: "The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace."

In an interview with PEOPLE before her death, Shannen spoke of her determination to fight the illness saying: "I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better."

Friends and former costars paid tribute to the actress following her untimely death:

I grew up watching Shannen Doherty, and years later I got the amazing chance to work with her in Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Loved her in Charmed, a favorite of mine. Truly sad that she is now gone, may you rest in peace 💔 pic.twitter.com/iLqtGjCei9

RIP Shannen Doherty. I met her during the Full House days. She was lovely and had a beautiful smile. Today, I’ll also think about the women in my life who all succumbed to cancer - my mom, my sister, Sharon and my niece, Shannon, who all were so strong and so beautiful.… pic.twitter.com/LEWLPCKnbK

Heartbreaking to know Shannen Doherty has passed away. She was such a sweet girl, a bright light and amazing talent. She was genuine, funny and smart. I'll never forget the years of hanging out with her in the early to mid 80's at The Youth In Film Awards. I found this picture… pic.twitter.com/FX2LwGGeXW
