Bono is in New York this week to critique a performance of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” and tell its producers and creators if he thinks the musical is ready to open on March 15, or if they should invest more time on the script and music.
The U2 front man wrote the music and lyrics for “Spider-Man” will his bandmate The Edge, but he has not seen a production of the musical since mid-January, before he left for the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Producers of the show are contemplating delaying the opening night an unprecedented sixth time in order to allow the creative team to improve the musical, which has received scathing reviews from leading theater critics.
When asked if Bono’s sole input would have a impact on the show’s opening, a spokesman for the production. Rick Miramontez, told “The New York Times”: “Bono is one important member of a larger creative/producing team. All decisions are made as a group.”
The show has become the most expensive musical in Broadway history, currently tallying at a cost of $65 million and growing.
