Walt Disney wore this iconic Irish jewellery item up until his dying day, even having it immortalized in his statues
The founder of the massive empire had a little-known connection to the Emerald Isle, particularly the west coast.
It has now been revealed that the film producer and Mickey Mouse creator owned a Claddagh Ring, which he considered one of his most prized possessions.
A recent TikTok video by Fallers Jewellers uncovered Walt’s Irish heritage, detailing the story behind his beloved ring.
His love for Ireland began when he and his wife Lillian took a trip her back in 1946. The holiday came shortly after their 20th wedding anniversary.
While visiting Galway, the happy couple purchased Claddagh Rings, with the trinket acting as one of two pieces of jewelry that Walt wore up until his death. The other was his wedding band.
The renowned Claddagh Ring has now been immortalized and can be seen on Disney’s finger in his famous Disneyland statue where he stands in front of the castle holding Mickey Mouse’s hand.
Disney’s grandfather was born in Kilkenny in the 1830s, just before his family emigrated to Canada and subsequently made their way to the United States.
The mogul visited Ireland more than once, the next time being for the Dublin premiere of Darby O’Gill and The Little People in 1959.
Many were amazed to learn of the icon’s Irish connection, taking to the comment section of the TikTok to share their excitement.
‘I never knew this, wow. Crazy how many irish and people with irish heritage in the world. Love to see so many of us being successful,’ one user wrote.
‘Learn something new everyday,’ another added.
‘My granny met him on her wedding day in Ireland and got his autograph,’ a third shared.
