The highly-anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott's 2000 blockbuster, which is set for theatrical release in Ireland on November 15, stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of his mother Lucilla. In the second official trailer, a huge twist is revealed as Lucius learns that he is the son of Maximus, played by Russell Crowe in the original "Gladiator", and not Lucius Verus, as he had been told since birth.

In the trailer, Lucilla, played by Connie Nielson who will reprise her role 24 years after she gave life to the character, is seen telling him the news before he heads out to battle.

She says: "Lucius, take your father's strength. His name was Maximus and I see him in you."

There are more heartbreaking scenes to come as Lucius is seen kissing a woman who is later seen lifeless with an arrow through her chest as he says: "Rome has taken everything from me but I will have my vengeance."

And it's not just our Maynooth man that has driven up the film's star power, as Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal and "Stranger Things'" Joseph Quinn all have important roles to play.

The first trailer for "Gladiator II" was first shown at ComicCon in Las Vegas in April, and was released to the public in July. And now fans have even more scenes of Paul Mescal in action to digest in the second trailer!

The film's director Ridley Scott previously revealed Lucius was last seen around 15 years ago and has been living "in the wilderness" with no connection to his Mum, who believes he might be dead.

"Gladiator II" promises to be a thrilling experience for viewers as Lucius and his men are seen taking on a rhinoceros amongst many other things in the famed Colosseum.

Speaking to Dave Moore on Today FM, Paul said: "I think what [the audience] should expect is that it picks the world of the first 'Gladiator' up and plants it 20 years into the future.

"It has the same energy and spirit of the first one but the character's journey through the mad world that is Ancient Rome couldn’t be more different.

"It balances an honoring of the first film but is very much its own beast and it very much is a beast of a film."

As fans of the first "Gladiator" film, we can hardly wait for its sequel in just four months' time!
