Guinness’ new advert for their Blonde American lager is up to their usual standards and is sure to give you chills. Using footage of Irish immigrants building the Manhattan skyline, arriving on boats and marching down Fifth Avenue on St. Patrick’s Day their new ad is dubbed “Time to Brew An Irish American Beer.”
With a voiceover by “Inception” and “Wind that Shakes the Barley” star Cillian Murphy, the advert’s opening images trace the Irish story in America from that first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty, to The Five Points in Manhattan, to the Irish people’s roles as builders, police and on to the White House with JFK.
This short video is sure to make you proud.
“When we Irish started coming to America, it wasn't easy, but we kept at it and became a part of the fabric of this country – same with our beer. Today, there are nearly 6.5 million Irish in Ireland and over 30 million in the U.S” Guinness’ statement on YouTube reads.
“So we thought it was about time to brew an Irish American beer. Our Brewers Project at St. James's Gate in Dublin came up with the recipe. We work with our friends in LaTrobe, PA to brew it in the USA. We call it Guinness Blonde American Lager. Irish-born, American-brewed.”
From Jacob Riis’ photos of the back alley’s in The Five Points (below) to the brave Irish construction workers teetering high upon the girders of skyscrapers, this new advert is sure to be another success for the Guinness brand.
As the advert states, before Prohibition (1919 – 1933) Guinness was the largest brewery in the world and the most famous beer was “black.” Guinness and the black stuff remain a globally recognized brand, but Arthur Guinness just 255 years ago signed up for a 9,000-year lease. The Dublin brewery’s message these days is “We have a lot more beer to make."
As craft lagers continue to gain favor among beer drinkers in the U.S., Guinness Master Brewers in Dublin collaborated with brewing experts in the United States to create Guinness Blonde American Lager.
It’s described as “a complex, flavorful lager with a floral, hoppy aroma that is a combination of Mosaic, Willamette and Mount Hood hops. Combining these American ingredients with the world famous 125-year-old Guinness yeast intertwines two brewing traditions – Guinness and American.”
This is the beginning of something new for Guinness – The Discovery Series. The aim is showcase a range of new ‘fusion brew’ beer options, all to be released under the Guinness trademark.
What do you think? Could this be your new tipple of choice?
