A Galway cafe has ranked no. 39 in a roundup of the 100 top coffee shops in the world.

Coffeewerk + Press on Quay St in Galway City was the only coffee shop in Ireland to make the list.

The first ever World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list was revealed on February 17 at Coffee Fest in Madrid, Spain.

The top 100 cafes were determined by a judging panel of coffee experts and industry experts, as well as a public vote worth 30 percent of the final score.

Rankings were based on barista expertise, customer service, ambience, innovation, consistency, sustainability practices, and the quality of pastries and coffee.

The winning cafes span across the globe, from Australia to Peru.

In an Instagram post celebrating the award, Coffeewerk + Press wrote: "We are incredibly honoured to be part of The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops".

"This is all thanks to our exceptional team both past and present whose dedication and passion make it possible".

In another post, the cafe and publishing house said they are "so proud to be recognised for theCoffeewerk + Press experience" that they offer the community.

"To be part of the first edition as the only cafe from Ireland is a real testament to all our wonderful staff both past and present who are the heartbeat of what we do everyday".

"As I reflect over the past ten years I am truly grateful for all the special moments we get to experience because of our little home in this small vibrant city," the post read.

Toby's Estate Coffee Roasters in Australia claimed the top spot on the list. In second place was Onyx Coffee Lab in Arkansas, followed by Gota Coffee Experts in Austria.
