Football Special is a soft drink produced by Donegal company, James McDaid & Corey Delamingus Ltd.
The brand manufactures a range of soft drinks including Pineapple, Creamy Cola, and American Ice Cream Soda. Football Special is one of the oldest and most distinguished products and won two awards for excellence in 1984 and 1989 from the London Beverage Society.
The drinks brand is about to receive a kickstart after winning a place on Lidl’s Kickstart Supplier Development Programme.
The initiative aims to provide producers the opportunity to supply their quality produce to more than 200 stores nationwide.
Other companies set to receive the kickstart from Lidl include The Good Dairy Company, a local family dairy business, as well as Mór Taste.
Social media users reacted following the news that McDaid's was set to be supplied in Lidl’s nationwide.
One said: "This is God's own stuff. Count yourselves lucky us Donegal folk are letting you try it."
Another noted: "This could be the best day of my life."
A third shared: "I am excited to try it for the first time."
A fourth mused: ‘Not sure how I feel about sharing this "Donegal delicacy."
Earlier this year, Reddit users got nostalgic about the classic childhood beverage, which can — at the moment — only be found in Donegal and surroundings.
The beverages are produced and bottled by Maine Soft Drinks Ltd in Co Antrim.
The drinks company also featured on RTÉ’s Today Show in recent months as comedian Bernard O’Shea gave a lesson on the history of fizzy drinks.
As well as some drinks from McDaid's, Bernard talked presenter Dáithí O’Sé through other classics such as Cidona and TK Lemonade.
The comic revealed McDaid's Banana Soda was his "favorite" drink.
