Ireland’s leading political figures have offered Christmas messages to the Irish at home and abroad this holiday season.
In his message, President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins called upon people to “reflect on the challenges that cast a dark shadow over our world” as well as “embrace the values of tolerance and mutual respect, recognizing that our differences are the threads that weave the intricate rich fabric of our shared identity.”
He further encouraged people “to forge together a renewed sense of extended solidarity, one that is shaped to fit and encompass all the citizens on our vulnerable planet,” and also “strive to make a meaningful difference and lay the foundations for a shared and brighter future where justice, compassion, and sustainability prevail.”
In his own message shared on Christmas Eve, Tánaiste Micheál Martin said he was looking forward to spending time with friends and family and hoped that everyone else was too.
"This is the turn of the year, and I wish you all a happy new year as we look forward to a new year to come and, in particular, the spring time, that is not far behind," the Tánaiste said.
I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy, peaceful and restful Christmas.

Elsewhere, Ireland’s Ambassador to the US, Geraldine Byrne Nason, extended her wishes for a "very happy holiday season" on behalf of Team Ireland at the Embassy in Washington, DC.
The Ambassador reflected on a "great year for Ireland's relationship with the United States."
Byrne Nason said her "stand out moment" was President Biden's official visit to Ireland in April.
After highlighting Ireland's newest consulate opening in Miami, Florida, the Ambassador reflected on the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, which she said "proved a valuable opportunity for us here to celebrate sustained peace on our island but also to recognize the pivotal role played in that peace ever since."
"Christmas is a time of hope," Byrne Nason said before sharing a quote from Shane MacGowan: "I can see a better time when all our dreams come true."
Wishing all of our friends across the United States a very happy Holiday Season! ????
