Appearing for the first time on charts in Ireland back in 2018, there’s one Irish baby name that has suddenly seen a spike in popularity.

Finding its origins in Ireland's rich mythical heritage, it was given to just 14 baby girls last year according to Ireland's Central Statistics Office – making it the perfect choice for parents looking for a beautiful Irish moniker that’s on the rare side.

Fódhla

Pronounced foh-lah, this gorgeous baby girl name takes inspiration from a key figure in Irish mythology – the goddess Fódhla.

Part of the Tuatha Dé Danann and daughter of Delbáeth and Ernmas, Fódhla is also used as a poetic name for Ireland.

Popularity of the name Fódhla

Sitting in 279th place on the naming charts for baby girls last year, Fódhla first appeared back in 2018 in the 512th spot.

Almost doubling in popularity, 14 little girls were given the name last year compared to just seven six years ago.

Falling slightly in and out of favour over the years, just four baby girls were named Fódhla in 2022 followed by a sharp spike in parents choosing the name in 2023.

Stemming from a cornerstone of Irish mythology, Fódhla is such a lovely option for mums and dads-to-be on the hunt for a pretty baby name perfect for their little bundle of joy.
