Saoirse Ronan stars in the critically acclaimed new drama "The Outrun", "a searingly honest drama about addiction, survival, and the power of nature to restore life and renew hope, set in the wild northern Orkney islands."
"The Outrun," which debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January, will be released in Irish and UK cinemas on September 27.
Ronan, who was born in New York and raised in Co Carlow, pulled double duty on the film, both starring in it and executive producing.
In the new film, Ronan stars as Rona, who, fresh out of rehab, returns to the Orkney Islands; a place both wild and beautiful right off the Scottish coast.
After more than a decade of living life on the edge in London, where she both found and lost love, Rona – now 30 – attempts to come to terms with her troubled past.
As she reconnects with the dramatic landscape where she grew up, memories of her traumatic childhood merge with more recent challenging events that have set her on the path to recovery.
Ronan is already generating serious Oscar buzz for the new film. A four-time nominee, perhaps "The Outrun" will see her finally take home the top prize.
"The Outrun" also stars Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu ("I May Destroy You"), BAFTA winner Stephen Dillane ("Alex Rider"), and Saskia Reeves ("Slow Horses").
Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, "The Outrun" is an adaptation of Amy Liptrot's award-winning memoir of the same name.
Arcade Pictures, founded by Ronan, her partner Jack Lowden, and Dominic Norris, produced "The Outrun" alongside Sarah Brocklehurst’s Brock Media.
In February last year, Lowden told Esquire it was a "great adventure" working with Ronan on the film through their production company.
"We want to only do stuff we believe in, so we’ve not set any specific parameters around that," Lowden said.
"But Saoirse and I both have a fascination with the countries we’re from, so we’re always going to have an eye on Irish and Scottish stuff because we’re both so obsessed with it."
