House prices in Ireland have sky-rocketed in recent years and for those of us still looking for our forever home, the property search can feel desperate sometimes.
While we cross our fingers and hope for prices to drop, it's still tempting to scroll through property sites and see what's on the market - for research purposes only!
It has become nearly impossible to find a place in Dublin that is both reasonably priced and in decent condition, so why not take a look at what's for sale across the rest of Ireland?
We've compared house prices to find out what €400,000 will get you in Dublin versus the rest of the country - and the difference is quite frankly, shocking!
Dublin
Glasnevin, Dublin 11
Glasnevin is known for its peaceful parks, the National Botanic Gardens, and of course the historic Glasnevin Cemetery.
The leafy neighborhood is rich with history and is only 30 minutes from Dublin's city centre but properties are hard to come by and come with a hefty price tag, meaning €400,000 will get you very little in this area.
This two-bedroom detached bungalow for €395,000 is situated in the heart of Glasnevin and represents what you'll get for your money in that area. The compact space features wooden floors, a cozy living room, a kitchen-dining room, a master bedroom, and a second bedroom which is used as an office.
As for a garden, the bungalow has a patio area out the back that would fit a table and two chairs but the front garden offers a warm welcome with trees and rose bushes planted in the lawn.
Lucan, Co. Dublin
If you head a little further west outside Dublin city, to the suburb of Lucan, you'll find this three-bathroom semi-detached home on the market for €400,000.
The red-brick property is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac, making it an ideal home for raising a family, and is within walking distance to local schools, shops, and sports facilities.
The house is 99 square meters and features a spacious living room with a gas fire, a light-filled dining room, and a tiled-floor kitchen with a separate utility room. Upstairs it has three bedrooms, with an en-suite in the master bedroom, as well as a family bathroom.
Outside, it features a decent-sized back garden with a lawn, flower beds, and an apple tree!
The rest of Ireland
Manorcunningham, Co. Donegal
Once you expand your search outside of Dublin, the results are incomparable! €400,000 will go a lot further outside The Pale, such as this gorgeous property in Manorcunningham, Co. Donegal.
This impressive five-bed, detached house for €395,000 is located ten minutes drive of Letterkenny town and would be the perfect family home for those who want to raise their kids in the countryside.
The front and rear gardens offer the owner plenty of privacy, with a gravel driveway, a stone wall entrance and wrought-iron gates leading onto the front lawn, patio area, and a private side garden with a fountain.
The ground floor features a grand entrance, with church-style double doors, and opens into a large open-plan kitchen-dining-living area.
The house is more than double the size of what you'll get for the same price in Dublin, boasting 252 square meters and five double bedrooms, three of which are en-suite and two that have walk-in dressing rooms.
The dining area opens onto a large garden with double patio doors leading onto an attractive wooden decking at the back. The perfect place for catching some morning sun!
Ballygawley, Co. Sligo
In the picturesque village of Ballygawley, in Sligo, it's hard to believe that €395,000 would get you Doonamurray House, a beautiful four-bedroom period home built in 1880.
The detached, stone-built property offers guests a bright welcome with a yellow door and stunning original period features such as high ceilings, ornate coving, wood paneling, and the original staircase.
Downstairs the 180-square-meter home features a richly-decorated separate lounge as well as a living room, which both come with a stove, as well as a cozy kitchen-dining room.
Upstairs, there are four large bedrooms, with a fireplace in the master bedroom, each decorated with wallpaper and wood-panelling.
Moyne, Co. Longford
In Moyne, Co. Longford, this house is an amazing find for €375,000 boasting 4.6 acres of gardens and twe separate paddocks, it would be the ideal location for horse-lovers to live out their dream.
The four-bedroom property is located in north Longford, 22km from Longford town, but the trade-off for the rural location is the abundance of space you'll get.
It also features some beautiful detail, with solid oak wood beams in the ceiling on all four reception rooms on the ground floor, parquet wood floors as well as marble open fireplaces in the sitting room and formal dining room.
Upstairs there are four double bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and a family bathroom that features a 1970 style decor.
While it may be a two-hour drive to work, we have to admit we're considering a move to the Irish countryside!
