Sopwell Hall, a huge period country home in Tipperary, is on the market for €7.5 million and comes with a 300-acre parkland estate and a 16th-century castle, Killaleigh Castle, on the grounds.
The impressive residence, near Cloughjordan, has a murky history like many of Ireland's Big Houses as it was built on land seized from an Irish clan during the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland.
The land, along with Killaleigh Castle, was granted to Colonel Thomas Sadleir, a Cromwellian soldier, and it remained in his family who later built a new principal residence, Sopwell Hall, in 1745.
Sopwell Hall was designed in the early Georgian style and boasts period features. The façade of the home has seven bay windows across and inside covering 1,322 square meters spread over 10 bedrooms and five bathrooms.
The property sits at the end of a half-mile driveway in the middle of the estate, offering the owners an abundance of privacy and views over the park and woodland.
Upon entrance to the property, the magnificent reception hall is spacious and well-proportioned and offers an aesthetically pleasing welcome to guests with a Persian rug and a vintage wooden center table.
On the ground floor, there are five principal reception rooms including a morning room, study, drawing room and dining room - not counting the old servant's hall, the boot room, the pantry, the office, a staff apartment, and the wine cellar.
Sopwell Hall is owned by antiques expert Michael Ramsden who fell in love with the property after he visited in 1985 and made a decision to buy it 'on the spot', he told the Irish Independent.
Along with his wife, Sarah, he has spent the last 35 years painstakingly repairing and restoring every inch of Sopwell Hall and its estate to its former 18th-century glory.
This is reflected in the historic furniture collected in the house as well as the immaculately preserved features of Georgian architecture including fluted Doric pilasters, archways, and ornate cornices.
The drawing room and dining room are each impressive with large marble chimneypieces and open fires.
Upstairs, on the first floor, there are five principal bedrooms including the master suite which comes complete with an en-suite and interconnecting doors to a second bedroom, which could be used as a dressing room.
The remaining five bedrooms are located on the second floor as well as a games room and a study.
Michael and Sarah have many fond memories from their 35 years living at Sopwell Hall, including hosting lawn meets where they entertained guests who attended hunts on their land.
It's not just the main house and castle that are included in the sale, it also comes with a studio and four estate lodges on the grounds.
The previous asking price of €8,500,000 has dropped by €1 million since last year as Michael and Sarah continue the search for the perfect new owner to take on the estate.
But whoever the lucky owner may be, it would be practically illegal not to throw a lawn party here!
