This year's National Famine Commemoration will take place in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

The annual public ceremony, which will be broadcast on RTÉ News Now channel, will provide an opportunity for the people of Co. Limerick and the surrounding counties to honour the memory of those who perished or emigrated as a result of An Gorta Mór.

The event will take place in Kilmallock Famine Memorial Park which is located within the historic Kilmallock Union Workhouse complex.

This is the first time the State commemoration has taken place in County Limerick. As in previous years, it will include military honours before culminating in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of all those who suffered or perished due to the Irish Famine.

During the announcement on March 5, Patrick O’Donovan, Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport, and Chair of the National Famine Commemoration Committee said:

“Today, it is with a deep sense of solemnity and pride that I announce Kilmallock, County Limerick, as the chosen location for this year’s National Famine Commemoration.

"This historic town, with its rich heritage and enduring spirit, offers a fitting backdrop for reflecting on one of the most pivotal and painful chapters of our nation’s history. The Famine not only reshaped the Irish landscape but also left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of generations. As we gather here this year, we do so not only to remember the lives lost but to honour the resilience, compassion, and strength that have defined our people in the face of hardship.

“The National Famine Commemoration is an opportunity for the host community to lead audiences in Ireland and abroad in reflecting on one of the most tragic and impactful events in Irish history. By working with Limerick City and County Council to share the story of their town, it can help put the suffering of the nation into context.

"The Kilmallock Famine Memorial Park, the site for this year’s National Famine Commemoration, is built on the very burial ground where famine victims were laid to rest in mass graves.

"It is believed that many are interred here, and the site stands as a testament to the loss, suffering, and endurance of this community. By choosing Kilmallock, we honour the memory of those who perished here, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring their story is never forgotten."

Minister O’Donovan also acknowledged and thanked the work of the National Famine Commemoration Committee, who bring their experience and expertise to ensure that the tragic events of the Famine are remembered appropriately. They also facilitate the creation of opportunities to highlight Ireland's continued links with the Diaspora and to celebrate the contributions of those who emigrated and of their descendants abroad.
