Mark your calendars for a unique evening blending Irish history, theater, and revolutionary spirit! On Monday, November 18, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, the American Irish Historical Society (AIHS) will host a Scintillating Shaw Party—a companion event to Gingold Theatrical Group's revival of George Bernard Shaw's classic play "The Devil's Discipline". This New York City production is the first in sixteen years and is staged at Theatre Row, 410 West 42nd Street, until November 23.
Set during the American Revolution, Shaw’s play transports audiences to the year 1777, amidst a thrilling atmosphere of defiance and belief. Although "The Devil’s Discipline" appears rooted in American history, Shaw originally wrote it as a passionate allegory for a Free Ireland, leading to its banning in Britain. Featuring a lively ensemble of characters who stand up for their convictions, the play showcases Shaw’s wit and his unapologetic support for Irish independence.
The Scintillating Shaw Party will bring together distinguished speakers, including Director David Staller, Dr. Elizabeth Stack of the American Irish Historical Society, and cast members. The discussion will delve into Shaw's legacy, the role of Ireland, the influence of women in his works, and his ardent support for democracy. Audiences will gain deeper insights into Shaw’s art and its timeless resonance with themes of freedom, resistance, and justice.
This special event is free and open to the public, with registration available here.
