The American Irish Historical Society (AIHS) invites you to an insightful virtual presentation, From Shannon to Dallas: The Final Twenty-One Weeks of JFK’s Presidency, on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 6:05 PM. This event delves into the closing months of President John F. Kennedy’s life, exploring one of the most pivotal periods of his presidency.
The presentation, led by esteemed scholars Dr. Brian Murphy and Professor Donnacha Ó Beacháin, will chronicle JFK’s journey from Shannon Airport on June 29, 1963, to his tragic assassination in Dallas, Texas, on November 22.
The speakers will highlight how these weeks reflected Kennedy’s determined pursuit of peace in the shadow of the Cold War. Marked by landmark achievements like the nuclear test ban treaty and outreach to Cold War adversaries, this period encapsulates the President’s transformation from a staunch Cold Warrior to an advocate for peaceful coexistence.
On the home front, Kennedy navigated crucial issues such as civil rights and began laying the groundwork for his 1964 re-election campaign. This analysis will shed light on JFK’s dual commitment to international diplomacy and domestic progress during his final months.
The presenters bring exceptional expertise to the discussion. Dr. Brian Murphy, a lecturer at Technological University Dublin, is an accomplished historian with deep insights into Irish and modern political history. Having served as a speechwriter for Bertie Ahern during the Good Friday Agreement, Dr. Murphy offers a unique perspective on leadership during times of significant political change.
Professor Donnacha Ó Beacháin, a noted authority in politics at Dublin City University, has extensively researched Irish studies and foreign policy. His acclaimed book, "From Partition to Brexit: The Irish Government and Northern Ireland", underscores his profound understanding of historical and political complexities.
This event is free, and attendees can register to receive the Zoom link.
