Hozier brought out his pal and fellow chart-topping musician Ed Sheeran for a surprise rendition of "Work Song" at the Pinkpop music festival in The Netherlands this past weekend.

Teasing out his surprise guest, Irish singer-songwriter Hozier said it was "such a treat" to invite to the stage "one of the biggest artists on the planet" who is also a "wonderful person and a wonderful guy."

When Hozier finally welcomed Sheeran to the stage, the massive crowd erupted in applause.

The two launched into a soulful rendition of the song that's featured on Hozier's self-titled 2014 debut album.

It was the first time the two talented musicians shared the stage.

After the performance that delighted fans of both singers, Sheeran - who has considerable Irish roots - shared a clip of him and his longtime pal discussing how to perform the duet.

"First met Hozier back in 2014," Sheeran wrote, "We did a run of festivals together and made fast friends.

“This is the first time we’ve played together on stage, and it was such a joy.

“I’m such a fan, thanks so much for having me up for one of my favorite songs of yours! You and your band are incredible x”

In his own post on Instagram, Hozier - the native of Co Wicklow whose real name is Andrew Hozier-Byrne - offered similarly warm words to his fellow musician: "Getting to know @teddysphotos over the years has been a gift.

"He’s someone who’s always shown great support and kindness to other artists around him and is one of those artists who makes great space for others on his stage and in his work.

"Thank you so much for joining us, brother, that was a joy. You’re one of a kind!"
