Living and working in a foreign country is a fantastic way to expand your horizons, both personally and professionally. It can be an exciting, sometimes daunting experience, but moving to another country is often one of the best career moves you can make.

Whether you’re looking for a change of scenery or looking for your dream job, making the decision to move countries opens the whole world to you – literally. More opportunities, less competition

Our most recent Employment Monitor found that 60% of Irish employers are less likely to hire UK nationals since they voted to leave the EU. While this doesn’t bode too well for the British, it does make things a little bit easier for other people looking to move to Ireland. The UK has been Ireland’s biggest source of immigration since records began, so any changes to their right to work here could fundamentally alter the competitiveness of the Irish jobs market, at least in the short-term.

The Brexit result also means that Ireland is now the only English speaking country in the EU, making it a very attractive location for businesses and jobseekers alike. With UK access to the single market an extremely unlikely scenario, many businesses are now looking to Ireland as a possible location for establishing their European bases. Article 50 has yet to be triggered, but Ireland could be set for an influx of foreign investment in the near future.

The best country in the world

Ireland is officially the best country in the world, at least according to the Good Countries Index. This index rates countries on several issues, such as equality, health, and security, and determines which country is the “best” overall. This alone may not be enough to call Ireland the best country in the world, but there is other evidence to back up that claim.

Last year, Ireland ranked as the 4th most friendly country worldwide. Earlier this year, we were deemed the 9th most reputable country in the world, and just yesterday we came in 12th for safety. Ireland also places among the top 20 countries for both wealth and happiness, which don’t always go hand in hand. So, if a safe, happy, friendly, rich life sounds appealing, Ireland may be the place for you.

Employers love the experience

International experience of any kind, be it work or study, is a trait that’s always in high demand among employers. A study published by the Erasmus program found that 64% of employers think that international experience is an important factor for any potential new hires. Another study by the University of California found that 97% of students who studied abroad were employed within 12 months of leaving school, compared to 49% of those who did not travel. So even if you don’t plan to relocate forever, working abroad can open doors for you back home.

Making the decision to uproot your life and move to another country isn’t always an easy one, but there are some good reasons to do so.
