An American teenager has been arrested in connection with the murder of Irish student Nicola Furlong, 21, in Tokyo, Japan last month. Furlong was in Japan studying when she met her untimely death.

MSN reports that a spokesman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that an American minor is being held in connection with the murder of Furlong.

The suspect and another American man, 23, had already been detained on suspicion of giving alcoholic drinks to Furlong and her friend, also a 21-year-old Irish woman, and then groping her inside a taxi.

Furlong, who was studying in Takasaki city about 60 miles northwest of Tokyo, was in the country’s capital with a friend, also Irish, to attend a Nicki Minaj concert.

Jiji Press news agency reported, quoting police sources, that the suspect has admitted to pressing his hands over Furlong’s neck, but insisted that he did not intend to kill her. The story follows suit with an autopsy report which revealed that Furlong died of strangulation.

Jiji also said that the man traveled to Japan in hopes of joining a musical group. He allegedly attacked Furlong when she denied his sexual advances.

The Irish Independent reports that just three weeks after Furlong’s tragic death, her family in Wexford began the fight for justice for her uncle James Doyle who died in an unrelated attack in 2009. An inquest into the matter found that Doyle had died as a result of an “unlawful killing,” which entailed serious head trauma.

James (Jim) Doyle, 40, also of Wexford, sustained massive head injuries after he was attacked by three men outside a nightclub in the early hours of November 14, 2009.
