More than forty people were injured in Yonkers in what may have been one of the worst ever crashes on the Bronx River Parkway late Sunday night.

There were no fatalities, but 45 people were transported to local hospitals with injuries. Speaking at the scene of the huge pile-up, Lt. Tom Murphy of Westchester County Police said, “It was pretty amazing, I’ve never seen a pile up like this… It looked like a war zone.”

The injured were transported to St. John's Riverside Hospital, the Lawrence Hospital and St Joseph's Medical Center.

It was the first time that Yonkers Police Department utilized their Medical Evacuation Transportation Unit, which allowed them to transport 21 of the 45 patients to St. Joseph’s Medical Center at the same time. LT Patrick McCormack of YPD noted that the METU is the only such vehicle in Westchester. It was purchased with federal funds.

“The METU was provided through federal funding and is considered a national asset,” Yonkers police Commissioner Charles Gardner said.

“It can be deployed throughout our area for any type of large scale emergency. We are fortunate in this incident to have the ability to treat and safely transport a large number of people to an area hospital during some challenging weather conditions. The METU has already shown its usefulness in enhancing patient care.”

The accident occurred near Desmond Avenue in Yonkers around 11 pm. The accident wasn't  cleared until early Monday morning, Lohud reported.

The crash was apparently caused by road conditions after a wintry storm moved into the area late Sunday evening.
